After the Aliso Viejo natural gas leak, Mayor Eric Garcetti shut down the pipeline due to safety concerns, and conserving energy in LA became more important than ever.
To get through the scorching summer without blackouts, the entire city needed to cut back – so we got the Mayor's Office to lead by example. Starting with one of the most iconic sets of lights in the city, the Urban Lights at LACMA, we set out with the message that it's time we put our energy into saving it.
On one of the hottest days in July, we had prominent buildings around Los Angeles go dark in support of the effort to reduce energy use across the country by 5%.
